New Site

I recently changed my hosting to A2, and I took the opportunity to make some changes to bsowell.net. As usual, I bit off more than I can chew, and a number of things still need to be fixed. The problems I know about include:

  •  Site doesn’t work in Internet Explorer. What a surprise. I’ll fix it, but you should upgrade to a better browser.
  • Some posts have strange formatting. Some of the special characters got garbled during the move. I fixed most of the front page, but some of the older posts are still messed up.
  • I haven’t finished editing the new theme. I’m using a slightly modified version of Grid Focus by Derek Punsalan. I like the theme, but I still need to tweak the column widths and fix the header.

If something else seems massively broken, let me know. The points above will improve as I get to them.

2007 In places

A là Kottke, a list of places I visited in 2007, in no particular order:

  • Northfield, MN*
  • Minneapolis, MN
  • Ann Arbor, MI
  • Philadelphia, PA
  • Ithaca, NY*
  • Omaha, NE*
  • Chicago, IL
  • Memphis, TN*
  • St. Louis, MO
  • New York, NY

I spent at least one night in each place (Minneapolis was close – I left at 4:00 am). I visited cities with a * multiple times on non-consecutive days.

Fire

There was a fire in the parking lot right outside my office today. They were grilling for some sort of catered event in Duffield Hall, and the whole thing sort of went up in flames. The flames were maybe twice as big as in the photo above, and it was fortunate that there wasn’t anywhere for it to spread.

Luckily nobody was hurt, and the Ithaca fire department showed up in force. There were some gas tanks from the grilling that started to catch fire, and I think there was some concern that they might explode. The firefighters hosed them down for at least 20 minutes to cool them off.

Firefighters at Cornell

I didn’t get so much work done this afternoon, but it was certainly quite a spectacle.
